Program info
ArcGIS ArcIMS is a legacy web mapping server from Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (Esri) that enabled organizations to publish and manage interactive maps, spatial data, and metadata over the internet and intranets. Built on a scalable, multi-tier architecture—comprising web server connectors, an application server, and spatial servers—ArcIMS delivered dynamic map images (image services), vector features (feature services), and metadata catalogs. It communicated using Esri’s ArcXML protocol and supported open standards such as OGC WMS (and, in later releases, WFS). Administrators could author services from shapefiles and other file-based data or enterprise geodatabases via ArcSDE, and deploy turnkey HTML or Java viewers or custom clients through available connectors and APIs. ArcIMS ran on Windows and UNIX platforms and became a foundational technology for early web GIS across government, utilities, academia, and business. The product has since been retired and superseded by ArcGIS Server and the ArcGIS Enterprise platform, with cloud-based options available in ArcGIS Online.
